Kamilah Marshall

Kamilah Marshall (formerly Kamilah Martin) is an American singer, songwriter and actress best known for her roles in Hairspray, Rent, and The Lion King.^[1]

Hairspray[]

She played Peaches, one of The Dynamites, as part of the original Broadway cast of Hairspray.^[3] She later reprized this role, along with fellow OBC Dynamites, Shayna Steele and Judine Somerville.^[4] Kamilah was also the original understudy for Motormouth Maybelle.^[5]

Current Work[]

Kamilah has been a member of Bette Midler's Staggering Harlettes since 2003.^[6] She also tours with Taylor Swift as a backup singer and dancer.^[7]

Mashall adopted the stage name Gypsy Moonshine.^[8]^[9] She released her first album, Gypsy Moonshine, in 2010.^[10] Note: This is not to be confused with the white folk band who adopted the name "Gypsy Moonshine" four years after Kamilah released her album and nearly a decade after she first began using the name.

Kamilah Marshall and Linda Hart were both members of Bette Midler's Staggering Harlettes. They later performed together in Hairspray, Marshall as on of The Dynamites and Hart as Velma Von Tussle.^[11]
Kamilah and Ephraim Sykes both performed in Rent. They later performed together in Hairspray Live!, Marshall reprising her role as a Dynamite and Sykes as Seaweed Stubbs.^[12]
Both Kamilah Marshall and Shahadi Wright Joseph performed in The Lion King on Broadway. They also performed together in Hairspray Live!, with Shahadi performing as Inez Stubbs.
When songwriting, Kamilah often discusses ideas with Shayna Steele and Shoshana Bean, two of her fellow alumni for the original Broadway production of Hairspray.^[2]
