Janetta is a student at Patterson Park High School in Hairspray's Baltimore. She is also a dancer on The Corny Collins Show's segregated Rhythm and Blues Day, better known as "Negro Day."
Janetta is first seen dancing and goofing off in detention with her fellow "Negro Day" castmates.
