"It Takes Two" is a song in Act I of Hairspray. It is performed by Link Larkin with Tracy Turnblad joining in at the end.
Hairspray (musical)[]
"It Takes Two" is the eighth song in Act I. It occurs after the "The Nicest Kids in Town (reprise)" and before "Velma's Revenge."
When Tracy is added to the show, Corny asks her if she would like Link Larkin to sing a song just for her. Tracy says yes, and Link performs "It Takes Two." At the end of the song, Tracy kisses him, much to everyone's surprise.
Link doesn't mind the kiss, telling a distraught Amber that, "It was just a cool way to end the song." Nonetheless, this feeds Amber's jealousy and dislike for Tracy, eventually leading to a breakup with Link.
Hairspray (2007)[]
Hairspray (2007) changed it up a bit. "It Takes Two" is instead the third song to take place, happening before Tracy auditions for the show and in the same broadcast that Brenda's departure is announced. Tracy and Penny watch Link's performance while standing in front of a television store's display.
Shortly before he performs, Velma threatens the cameraman to show more of her daughter, Amber. As such, Amber is dancing in front of Link the entire time, blocking most of the camera's view of him.
It is followed by "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs."
Hairspray Live![]
This performance was almost identical to that of the musical. The biggest change is that it is proceeded by Corny Collins performing "Ladies' Choice."
Lyrics[]
(COUNCIL MEMBERS - GUYS)
Oooh
It takes two
Oooh, wop!
(LINK)
They say it's a man's world
Well, that cannot be denied
But what good's a man's world
Without a woman by his side?
And so I will wait
Until that moment you decide
(LINK & COUNCIL GUYS)
That I'm your man
And you're my girl
That I'm the sea
And you're the pearl
It takes two, baby
It takes two - wop!
(LINK)
A king ain't a king
Without the power behind the throne
A prince is a pauper, babe
Without a chick to call his own
So please, darling, choose me
I don't wanna rule alone
Tell me
(LINK & GUYS)
I'm your king
And you're my queen
That no one else
Can come between
It takes two, baby
It takes two
(GUYS)
Don't you know
(LINK)
Lancelot had Guinevere
Mrs. Claus has old St. Nick
Romeo had Juliet
And Liz, well, she has her Dick
They say it takes two to tango
Well, that tango's child's play
So take me to the dance floor
And we'll twist the night away
Just like Frankie Avalon
Has his favorite musketeer
I dream of a lover, babe
To say the things I long to hear
So come closer, baby
Oh, and whisper in my ear
(LINK & TRACY)
Tell me that you're my girl (I'm your girl)
And I'm your boy (You're my boy)
That you're my pride (I'm your pride)
And I'm your joy (You're my joy)
I'm the sand (You're the sand)
And you're the tide (I'm the tide)
I'll be the groom (Be the groom)
If you'll be my bride (I'll be your bride)
It takes two, baby (It takes two)
It takes two (It takes two)
